The Rogue's Gamble (Love and Other Scandals) - extasiswings - 9-1-1 (TV) [Archive of Our Own]

I’ve teased, I’ve joked, I’ve waited to see if this plot bunny would stick around long enough to actually turn into something real, and now that I’m several chapters into a draft I think I can officially pull back the curtain.  Since this is just the prologue I might post the official first chapter later as well, but for now…

Summary:

Evan Buckley, Marquess of Holbrook, hasn’t moved regularly in polite society for years—not since his sister, the Duchess of Kendall, disappeared only three years after her marriage to the duke. Instead, he vanished as well, into the dark underbelly of London, ultimately re-emerging as one of four owners of London’s most exclusive gambling hell, where secrets are currency as much as money itself. But within the walls of 118 Bow Street, the question remains—is the young lord looking for redemption? Or revenge…?

Eddie Diaz, displaced American and Covent Garden prizefighter, has a reputation for being unbeatable—or at least, he did before he started losing. But not all is as it seems, and the Hellfire Club happens to be in need of a man in a ring…

When worlds collide and secrets are revealed, will the lives of both men change for the better? Or will everything they hold dear go up in flames?

woman: acknowledges misogyny for one single second

the world: why are you talking about misogyny instead of literally every other problem on earth also why do you want everyone who isnt a woman to drop dead

This might feel like a reach, but in Susan Douglas book that’s a history of baby boomer feminist pop culture, she talks a lot about both 1960s news shows and sitcomes disparaged the women’s movement in exactly this way.

On the nightly news it was serious reporters and commentators who suddenly cared A LOT about the Civil Rights movement when they could use it as a serious counterpoint to the selfish and silly whims of white American housewives.  They also, for some reason, elevated “the scourge of highway billboards” as slightly below civil rights but much, much more important than feminism and something that it would behoove white housewives to focus on instead.

In sitcoms (she especially references Green Acres), the joke is that, again, a spoiled housewife discovers feminism and has the narcissistic gall to act like SHE is oppressed. Fortunately, her comical insistence that she and her husband flip chores proves to her that men work much, much harder than women and she was only able to complete the Men’s Work by secretly hiring a man. The biggest running gag on this show and others was the foolishness of women comparing their “sexism” to the real oppression felt by black Americans in the south, to those suffering under Communism, to the starvation in the developing world.

So, I guess  plus ça change, etc

I really believe there’s some sort of “emperor’s new clothes” phenomenon happening with Gen Z discoursers where they’re too afraid to question the logic of some of the discourse being thrown at them for fear of appearing to be unwoke so they just blindly parrot it not to be excluded by their peers

not just a Gen Z thing, like that’s a valid criticism of tumblr few years back, and I’m not ashamed to admit it sucked me in too. people can say whatever shit they want as long as they use the right vocabulary and an agressive tone that just implies that disagreement is out of the question. it sinks in because you will get similar messages about legitimate issues and sometimes from the same people.

“Noël” was soooo good, I really hope at least one of the 911 writers has seen it re: Eddie’s trauma.... just to inspire them y’know?

It’s literally one of my all time favorite tv episodes of anything ever and yes if we got a Noël-esque exploration of Eddie’s trauma I would cry and probably never shut up about it

random but i’ve started rewatching the west wing (up to ‘in excelsis deo’ my beloved) and ughhh mrs landingham 😭😭😭

ALWAYS love a TWW rewatch (that reminds me, I should continue mine, I think left off partway through S5) but god yes Mrs. Landingham is so wonderful and honestly??? They went so hard those first two seasons for their Christmas eps (In excelsis deo and Noel) and FOR WHAT but I actually really appreciate that they didn’t just go for “holidays are great and happy and fun times for all” with those and instead really did some meaningful storytelling 😭😭😭
